Dear African Graduate Students,
Greetings from the African Graduate Student Association, and welcome to the Spring 2026 semester!
To those of you joining us for the first time, congratulations on beginning this exciting chapter at Louisiana State University. To our returning members, welcome back. We are thrilled to have you as part of our community.
As you settle into this semester, I want you to know that AGSA stands ready to support you. We understand the unique journey you are on: balancing rigorous academic demands with cultural adjustment, managing finances on a graduate stipend, maintaining your F-1 status, and often navigating all of this far from home and family. These challenges are real, but so is your strength and resilience.
This semester, I encourage you to actively engage with our AGSA community. Participate in our cultural events that celebrate our rich African heritage. Connect with fellow students who share your experiences and can offer both friendship and advice. Reach out to our executive committee whenever you need assistance—we are here to serve you.
Beyond AGSA, make the most of your time at LSU. Build strong relationships with your advisors and professors. Explore research opportunities in your field. Utilize campus resources like the Student Health Center, Counseling Center, and International Student Services. Join professional organizations that align with your career goals. These investments in yourself will pay dividends throughout your academic journey and beyond.
Remember three essential principles this semester. First, protect your immigration status by staying enrolled full-time and consulting International Student Services before making any major decisions. Second, prioritize your academic success from day one, as strong habits established early will carry you through challenging times. Third, take care of your wellbeing, because your mental and physical health are just as important as your grades.
You are part of a vibrant tradition of African scholars who have excelled at LSU and gone on to make significant contributions in their fields and communities. Your diverse perspectives, unique experiences, and unwavering determination strengthen not just AGSA, but the entire LSU graduate community. AGSA is more than an organization—we are your family away from home.
I wish you a semester filled with academic achievement, personal growth, and meaningful connections. Let's make Spring 2026 extraordinary.
Geaux Tigers!
Sincerely,
Monsuru Olatunji Dauda
