The National Council Negro Women (NCNW) is an "organization of organizations," comprised of 330 campus and community-based sections and 33 national women's organizations that enlightens, inspires, and connects more than 2,000,000 women and men. Its mission is to lead, advocate for, and empower women of African descent, their families, and communities. It was founded in 1935 by Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, an influential educator and activist, and for more than fifty years, the iconic Dr. Dorothy Height was president of NCNW.

The BWE-I Initiative at LSU aids in ensuring an environment where black women can thrive as students. A small team of students and staff advocate for their holistic well-being in this program with the assistance of campus partners, community members, students, faculty, and staff. We believe the BWE-I Initiative is where valued mentoring and developing young black women in their academic, professional, physical, social, identity, civic, and emotional well-being meet. We advocate for equity in resources and opportunities and strive to bring everyone in the LSU community to work towards the retention, matriculation, and graduation of our students. Everyone participating in the initiative must embrace the value of mentoring young women as they strive to reach their fullest potential while focusing on their academic, professional, physical, social, identity, civic, and emotional well-being.

The Black Women's Empowerment Initiative was established to promote, maintain, and advance the well-being of Black Women at LSU. Our purpose is to promote equity and community building by cultivating intentional spaces for Black Women to gather, developing workshops and programming around pertinent topics, and holding space together.   

We have an emphasis on developing female leaders with a drive and ambition who want to continue to uplift women in today's society. Each individual participating in the initiative should embrace the value of nurturing young women as they look toward brighter futures while focusing on the development of the social, emotional, educational, and physical needs of young minority women.

Our mission is to address systemic injustices within the criminal justice system, including but are not limited to judicial misconduct, interrogation abuses, police brutality, racial disparities, and the need for prison reform. We are dedicated to educating and advocating for those affected by these issues, while also providing essential services and raising funds to support individuals impacted by the system. Additionally, we aim to engage college students in understanding these injustices, fostering awareness and equipping them to continue the fight for justice beyond their academic careers. A key aspect of our work is educating students and the community about their fundamental rights, empowering them to recognize and defend these rights in the face of injustice. Our efforts also address broader public policy concerns, advocating for legislative reforms that promote equity and accountability within the criminal justice framework. Furthermore, we focus on educating individuals about political engagement, empowering them to position themselves to make meaningful changes within politics, especially in areas related to criminal justice reform.

With a dedicated focus on addressing wrongful convictions, ICLSU confronts a deeply troubling reality that individuals are unjustly imprisoned, often due to underlying factors of systemic racism. The disproportionate impact on Black and Latinx communities, with 64% of those freed with the assistance of the Innocence Project being from these demographics, highlights the deeply ingrained inequities within our legal system. These injustices not only affect the innocent individuals who are wrongfully convicted but also reverberate through their families and communities, perpetuating cycles of trauma and distrust. Twenty-one out of twenty-three exonerations based on DNA evidence in Louisiana involved mistaken eyewitness identifications, showcasing a glaring flaw in the process of criminal justice. The fact that two of these individuals were sentenced to the death penalty underscores the severity of the issue and the dire consequences of such miscarriages of justice. In response to these challenges, the Innocence Club at LSU believes in education and advocacy on these pressing issues. Through outreach efforts, we seek to inform the public about the flaws that lead to wrongful convictions, including witness misidentification, misapplication of forensic science, false confessions, coerced pleas, unreliable informants, inadequate defense, and official misconduct.We aim to push for changes that will address the root causes of wrongful convictions and ensure a fairer and more equitable criminal justice system for all. Fundraising efforts are also a pillar of our organization, as we seek to support the vital work of local organizations connected with The Innocence Network. These funds provide critical resources for legal representation, investigative efforts, and support services for innocent individuals and their families as they navigate the complex process of exoneration and reintegration into society.

RHA represents all students living on campus and works as a governing body in collaboration with the Department of Residential Life by reviewing and recommending changes in regulations, policies, and physical facilities pertinent and beneficial to students living on campus.

As the second largest student organization at LSU, RHA has a place for everyone. Each residence hall and apartment community have a Community Council – composed of student officers elected by on-campus residents- that represents each hall during RHA general assembly meetings, plans social and educational programs for its community, and works with the community's professional staff to improve the quality of life for residents.
RHA also organizes and sponsors educational, social, and leadership activities of benefit and interest to on-campus residents, like its annual crawfish boil, move-in block party, Homecoming week's Splatterbeat, and more. With over two million people currently behind bars, the United States remains the largest incarcerator in the world. Louisiana has the second-largest incarceration rate in the country, only recently unseated as number one in 2018. Tiger Prison Project is a student coalition dedicated to ending mass incarceration, improving the lives of which it has affected, and promoting fair and effective alternatives. In order to restore our community, we give LSU students opportunities to work with local organizations that aid individuals and families negatively impacted by these systems.
