Adelante

Adelante is the Spanish word for "forward." Through volunteering with the non-profit Humanities Amped, we are a forward-thinking initiative recruiting LSU students to tutor immigrant students in Tara High School. LSU volunteers will be matched with a Tara teacher and work with students in their classroom for a minimum of two class periods per week. Through this process, LSU students will gain professional skills while giving back to their community.

Our Story:

Morgan Johnson began "Project Thrive" in 2017 upon pursuing an internship with the ESL students at McKinley High School. Inspired to offer supplementary resources, she organized a group of LSU student volunteers to engage in in-class tutoring during the school day. After years of working solely with McKinley High School students, present co-Coordinators Lillian Wilder and Anna Cattar partnered with non-profit Humanities Amped and are now situated at Tara High School under the name "Adelante". During the Fall 2022 semester, our vision was to cultivate a small community of LSU volunteers dedicated to serving students in Tara High School. We had six LSU volunteers for the Fall 2022 semester, and are predicted to have 25 LSU volunteers for the Spring 2023 semester. We feel grateful for the expansion of our program, and look forward to what the Spring 2023 semester holds!

At Adelante, we are a community of LSU honors and non-honors volunteers committed to helping ESL students in Tara High School reach their full potential by providing tutoring and resources.

We are comprised of bilingual volunteers who demonstrate the compassion and social skills needed to work in groups and one-on-one with high school students to provide tutoring for a minimum of 3 hours per week.

Traits of Project Thrive Volunteers:

  1. Conversational Spanish Skills - In order to truly make an impact on ESL students, volunteers must be able to effectively communicate with them. One of our highest priorities in volunteer recruitment is the ability to speak conversational Spanish.
  2. Compassion, Patience, and Diligence - Tutoring high school students requires diligence, patience, and compassion. For volunteers with a passion for the positive outcomes of the students they assist - these traits will come naturally.
  3. Dedication and Responsibility - In order to have a true impact, it's necessary to be consistent and dedicated in our service. We are looking forward to working with volunteers who are willing to uphold the following: honor their commitments, remain for the duration of sessions, communicate informally and effectively with students, fellow volunteers, and coordinators.

At Adelante, we believe that fostering an accepting and supportive community starts with connecting with each other! Once initiated, our volunteers are welcome to join us for an optional monthly meal to talk with the co-coordinators and each other in a chill environment.
